Ecuadorian Hermit CrabsThis is a featured page

Hand blown glass E-crabI first welcomed five hermit crabs into my home in December 2007, after what I thought was extensive research on hermit crab care in books and web sites. Very quickly I found out there was still much more to learn! Hopefully my experiences can help others considering adopting hermit crabs find the resources they need to provide optimal care.

Why Ecuadorian Hermit Crabs?

I chose E-crabs as pets because my house rabbit is very possessive and jealous. Nari does not appreciate my having any other pets that will take attention time away from him. Behind the glass walls of the crabitat, my E-crabs are safe from my vengeful bunny!

That being said, E-crabs are fascinating pets. I can spend hours each day observing their activities. I enjoy providing new shells, so I can watch their antennae flutter with excitement, as they are investigated. My E-crabs will dig deep into the substrate next to the glass, which is an amusing sight. My heart skips a beat when they lose their grip climbing, and drop to the ground.

Hermit Crab AssociationI hope that with good husbandry, they will be with me for many years. I will share the results of my research and my experiences with you on this wiki. If you have questions that are not answered on this site, a great resource that I recommend is the Hermit Crab Association forum.
